Abstract :
Reports on survey and rescue excavations carried out between 1988 and 1990 on a site threatened by river erosion. S. Giles is situated near Brompton on Swale, and was founded in the 12th c. for the infirm and leprous. The project is thought to have been the most extensive investigation of a hospital site to date. The layout and development of the complex is described. It comprised a stone chapel with other buildings mostly of timber, although another stone building (possibly a refectory), had been added by the 15th c. The hospital was abandoned by the end of the 15th c. and the site became a farmstead in which some of the buildings were reused. Specialist reports discuss pottery and metalwork, tools, worked stone, painted wall plaster, and skeletal remains. ;
