Abstract :
Maranci writes in her conclusion, 'Indo-European scholarship played a fundamental role in the formulation of Strzygowski's Aryan architecture. With the rise of racist ideology in contemporary scholarship, his detailed comparative studies gave way to slimmer and more polemical works in the 1930s and 1940s. These works downplayed the regional characteristics of architecture, laying emphasis instead, on its common origins. His history of architecture was no longer a causal development, but generated by a universal creative force. Vergleichende Kunst became vereinige Kunst. As for Armenian architecture, to which he had initially attributed so many of the new artistic forms of the Middle Ages, it became, in his final years, another memorial to the Aryan myth.' [Strzygowski's Armenian studies largely concern medieval churches]. ;
