Abstract :
The first volume presents a fresh interpretation of the origins of the so-called Pilgrim's guide, and its dissemination and reception over six centuries, based on a new analysis of the 12 extant manuscripts and a collation of their variants. The 12 manuscripts date from the 13th to the 18th cs. One is English, one Italian; the rest were all made in the Iberian peninsula, the earliest probably produced in part by French craftsmen working in Santiago de Compostela about 1138. Among the eight Long Version manuscripts, four contain narrative illustration, portrait initials, and decoration in the form of foliate or pen-flourished initials. The guide reflects what was known about life, customs and pilgrimage in the second quarter of the 12th c. The detailed catalogue of manuscripts in the second volume provides a contribution to palaeography and cultural history, including notes on saints, relics, buildings, place-names, language, costumes and customs, history and art. ;
