Abstract :
Sets out the processes by which paintings are looked after and examined. Discusses the material nature of paintings and the ways in which they have changed, both naturally and at the hands of previous restorers. Describes the main types of conservation treatment carried out on panel and canvas paintings, and some of the problems involved in cleaning and restoration. A series of case studies of major works from the National Gallery illustrates the complex and varied issues which confront the conservator. ;
