Includes an autobiographical essay, 'An introduction to my art criticism,' which sets out the context and aims of the volume's 27 reprinted critical writings (written 1961-1977) as well as their relationship to the author's art historical works on 18th- and 19th-c. French painting. The criticism is mainly concerned with the work of Frank Stella, Morris Louis, Jules Olitski, Kenneth Noland, Anthony Caro, and issues of objecthood and theater as perceived in the 1960s. Closes with a bibliography of Fried's writings, exclusive of poetry, 1959-1977. ;
