Abstract :
An exhibition catalogue for part of the cycle of exhibitions, MoMA2000, featuring works of several media (painting, drawing, sculpture, prints, books, illustration, and photography) from the museum's collections. The introduction looks at various issues surrounding landscape painting and its development in the 19th c. It considers the roles of tradition, national identity, and tourism. Then six regional divisions of represented landscapes are laid out with pages of plates following introductory discussion: Paris; environs of Paris; Normandy, the Channel, and Brittany; Burgundy, or the Côte d'Or; the south of France (Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the Côte d'Azur including Nice, Saint Raphael, and Saint Tropez, L'Estaque, La Ciotat, Sète, and Collioure); and landscapes abroad (Horta de Ebro, Spain and Tangier, Morocco). The works of 21 artists appear: Eugène Atget, Edouard-Denis Baldus, Georges Braque, Paul Cézanne, Eugène Cuvelier, Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas, André Derain, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Charles Marville, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Ker-Xavier Roussel, Theo van Rysselberghe, Paul Sérusier, Georges-Pierre Seurat, Paul Signac, Taupin, and Louis Valtat. ;
