Abstract :
Examines painting techniques (media and underdrawing especially) in Renaissance Europe, noting that differences between North and South have previously often been exaggerated. Considers the introduction of oil technique into Venetian practice, discounting Vasari's account. Looks instead at paintings by Tura, Angelo da Siena, and Michele Pannonio for Ferrara's court, where Rogier van der Weyden's paintings were collected. Then writes of the likely influence of works by Dieric Bouts on such artists as Jacopo Bellini, Gentile Bellini, and Andrea Mantegna. Explores works by Giovanni Bellini, asserting the likelihood of his working simultaneously in both tempera and oil before Antonello arrived in the city in 1475. Antonello's techniques are considered next, positing that technical examination does not allow an assertion of direct influence from Petrus Christus or Jan van Eyck. Turns then to Cima da Conegliano and the likely impact that his and Giovanni Bellini's works had on Dürer, as well as reciprocal impact of the German on the Italians. Posits German landscape painting was important as an example of quick painting for Giorgione, Titian, Lotto, and Dosso Dossi. Notes the general standardization of techniques in the 16th c., citing parallels between Lambert Sustris and Titian, and Paolo Fiammingo and Tintoretto. Considers use of copper as a painting support. ;
