Abstract :
Traces the history of the Preti's commission (by cardinal Francesco Peretti Montalto and the Theatines) for mural paintings in the church of S. Andrea della Valle, Rome. Preti was initially commissioned for the whole of the central nave ceiling; this was eventually reduced to three framed images (Martyrdom of S. Andrew) in the apse, and two paintings on the sides of the high altar. Analyzes Preti's stylistic adaptation to the classicism of Domenichino's frescoes (early 1620s) in the upper section of the apse, noting the differences in their fresco technique. Disagrees with the opinion (expressed by Cassiano dal Pozzo followed by generations of later critics) that Preti's paintings strongly (and intentionally) contrast with those of the Bolognese painter. ;
