Abstract :
Reviews an exhibition (on view in London and New York, fall 1994-spring 1995) on Italian Renaissance manuscript illumination, critiquing the catalogue's neglect of Rome as a center for the production and patronage of this art form, and arguing that the approach taken oversimplifies a complex situation. Observes, from a survey of pertinent late 20th c. scholarship, that Rome (i.e., its papal court, monastic and religious foundations, and lay patrons) was a highly active center of this art, attracting illuminators from all over Italy and Europe. Also points to numerous examples of manuscripts in the Vatican Library, Rome, that were produced in the city during the period, but were not included in the exhibition. ;
