Catalogue for an exhibition centered on Hogarth's painting The Beggar's Opera (New Haven, Yale Center for British Art) and an early copy of that subject by another hand (Farmington, Lewis Walpole Library). Hogarth's pictures of John Gay's opera are explored in relation to theatrical and political history, and other visual satire of the period.
