Abstract :
Studies Gibbons's depictions of music and musical instruments (particularly recorders and violins), finding that the incised scores are identifiable as contemporaneously published sheet music and that the instruments are markedly accurate. This leads to a redating of some carvings and an expanded appreciation of Gibbons's own musical interests and activities, as well as to questions of attribution. Notes references to Purcell's Fairy queen throughout the Petworth carvings. Contrasts Gibbons's work to that of such followers as Samuel Watson and Thomas Young, which is much more imaginative in the depiction of music and instruments, drawing perhaps on secondary sources. ;
