Abstract :
Studies Gibbons's wooden relief sculptures in the Carved Room of Petworth House, seeking to determine their original arrangement and their various rearrangements (augmented with carvings by John Selden and Jonathan Ritson) in preparation for a proposed restoration of the room to one of its intermediary stages (that of the 3rd Earl of Egremont's day, to incorporate paintings by Turner). Studies the initial patronage of Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, for Gibbons's ornamental carvings, independent sculpture, and art-selling, as well as for paintings by John Closterman. Speculates on the role of Daniel Marot in the design and furnishing of the house. Considers the arrangement of the paintings - principally family portraits - in the room's original layout and sets out the questions concerning the room that are still being explored. ;
