Abstract :
An historical survey of African American women photographers from the mid-19th c. through the 1980s. The material is divided into five chronological parts (1839-1910; 1910-1930; 1930-1950; 1950-1970; and 1970-1985) each containing an historical overview and featuring selected photographers with biographical information and reproductions of some of their work. Photographers included are: Mary E. Flenoy; Elise Forrest Harleston; Wilhelmina Pearl Selena Roberts; Elnora Teal; Winifred Hall Allen; Johnnie Mae Bomar; Alberta H. Brown; Billie Louise Barbour Davis; Emma Alice Downs; Camera Girls (interview with Charles Williams); Ann Elizabeth Jackson; Vera Jackson; Dora Miller; Eslanda Cardoza Goode Robeson; Elizabeth 'Tex' Williams; Joyce R. Wilson; Ethel Worthington; Mikki Ferrill; Inge Hardison; Grendel A.
