Publishes the history of the art collection at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, from its early years, beginning ca.1824, to the 1990s when the collection included 284 paintings and 43 sculptures. The collection contains works produced from as early as the 2nd c. A.D. through the present with the majority from the second half of the 19th c. through the present. Includes 165 known and 27 unidentified painters. An introduction summarizes the overall history and content of the collection, and its place and role within the institution. The book is arranged as a narrative with full catalogue entries integrated through chapters illuminating the chronological development of the collection. Features Thomas Eakins as an artist and his relationship with the college, especially in relation to The Gross clinic. Also includes a catalog (with extended commentaries) of several dozen nonmedical art objects and a catalog of European objects depicting European clinical and instructional scenes, portraits, and other works associated with famous practicioners. The volume contains an index of portrait subjects, of nonportraits, and of artists and makers. ;
