- Examines the changing images of two women, Maria van Reigersberch (wife of Hugo Grotius) and Maria Tesselschade (daughter of Roemer Visscher) from the 17th through the 19th c. Argues that 17th c. poets laid the foundation for 19th c. hero worship. Also considers the role of visual artists in promoting the reputations of the two women. ;
