Abstract :
Observations and speculations on bronze models (various collections) of horses attributable to Giambologna or related to his designs. Identifies the bronze Horse with the Vinta family arms in the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown (MA) as a cast after a design by Giambologna, and suggests that the patron of the cast was Belisario Vinta. The statuette, which was produced by Giambologna's successors (Pietro Tacca or Antonio Susini) should thus date to the early 17th c. Also suggests that the Venetian painting Portrait of a Gentleman with a Bronze Statuette of a Horse (Florence, Galleria Palatina) represents Cosimo Bartoli, the Florentine ambassador to Venice, who wrote to Vasari (1568) that he was having two wax models of horses by Giambologna cast in bronze. ;
