Abstract :
Examines the profound shift in the values of sculpture such that it ceased to be exclusively a material practice, and became open to a much wider range of activity. Focuses on art of the later 1960s which was produced in response to both Modernist sculpture and Minimal art. Under such concepts as 'anti-form' and Arte Povera, artists presented undifferentiated matter as sculpture. The work of such diverse artists as Joseph Beuys, Eve Hesse, Robert Morris and Richard Serra, is discussed. Describes in detail the contemporary theoretical basis of the work, for example the impact of psychoanalysis and the politics of the so-called New Left. Also situates the work in its social and historical context. ;
