Abstract :
Argues that Sedaine's practice, and his circle of artistic and dramatic friends, impacted on David's work in significant and surprising ways. David both learnt from Sedaine's theatrical contacts and, in adapting some of their stage techniques to canvas, actually achieved more than they were able to do. New documentary evidence points to unexpectedly close connections between David's work and the dramas of Sedaine and his circle. Submits that in a public sphere so pervaded by theatricality and in which collaboration and cross-fertilisation between practitioners of different arts was so widespread, David's wide and diverse circle of dramatic acquaintances might well have had a powerful impact on the shaping of his work. David achieved what theatrical, architectural and other reformers had been working towards - renewal of the French tradition in form which combined the techniques of the contemporary, and unofficial and foreign theatres with deep engagement with the antique to produce a modern sublime. ;
