Abstract :
A fieldwalking survey has thrown light on the origins of the village of Hargham, known to have been cleared in the late 17th or early 18th c. The survey revealed a surprisingly vigorous Middle Saxon nucleus which drifted eastwards to become a relatively minor medieval common-edge community. In addition, evidence of Wilby as a shrunken village has emerged. The documentary background has also been examined. Two 17th c. maps and accompanying surveys have allowed close comparison of the documentary and archaeological evidence. ;
