Abstract :
Provides a detailed archaeological and architectural study of the monument and definitive account of the 1991-1995 excavations. The neolithic construction is recognized as the most impressive prehistoric monument in the Channel Islands. Ecclesiological interest attaches to the stone-vaulted chapel which was erected on the summit of the mound in the 12th c. It was remodelled in the 1520s by Richard Mabon, rector of S. Martin and Dean of Jersey, and became a local centre of pilgrimage. The romantic associations of the monument appealed to Philippe d'Auvergne, Vice-Admiral of the British Fleet and titular Duke of Bouillon. In 1792-1793 he enveloped the medieval chapel in a miniature Neo-Gothic 'castle' which became known as the Prince's Tower. After its conversion into an 18th c. gothick residence, it became a Victorian beauty spot, and subsequently a German garrison headquarters in World War Two. ;
