Abstract :
The making of the book began as a conference on Vanbrugh, held in 1999, to celebrate the tercentenary of the building of Castle Howard. It was organized jointly by Castle Howard and the University of York. Prompted by recent restoration schemes undertaken by the National Trust at Claremont and Stowe, two gardens whose original layouts owed much to Vanbrugh, the papers examine the landscape designs of Vanbrugh and his contemporaries in the key period from 1690 to 1730. The subjects explored range from the pressing agricultural and financial issues that tested estate management, to the importance of the new, exotic plants that were reaching England from America. Gives a full account of Vanbrugh's years in India, and investigates his influence and reputation from the 1720s to modern times. Both formal and fortified gardens are examined, as are water gardens by Vanbrugh's friend and sometime collaborator, Stephen Switzer. The influence of contemporary playwrights and scholarly antiquaries is discussed in detail, as are topics such as travel, aesthetic theory and Palladian architectural innovation. ;
