Abstract :
According to tradition it was here (in the modern Arab village of Beit Sahur) that the angel announced the birth of Christ to the shepherds. Fragments of colored mosaic dated to the 4th c. have been recovered - the mosaic paved a natural cave, probably the 'cave of the shepherds' mentioned in early Christian literary sources. At the beginning of the 5th c., the cave was enlarged and its roof completely removed to facilitate the construction of a more spacious church. At the same time, a small chapel was built on top of the church. The site was destroyed in the 11th c. It remained a deserted ruin until recent excavations. ;
