Abstract :
Toward the end of the 10th c., Symeon Metaphrastes compiled an encyclopedia of Christian saints' lives arranged for liturgical use. The Metaphrastian Menologion, as this encyclopedia is called, quickly became a basic Byzantine sourcebook, issued in numerous ten-volume manuscript editions. Relatively few Menologion manuscripts were ever illustrated; but the 43 that survive constitute an extraordinarly abundant and diverse corpus, the very richness of which has hitherto discouraged comprehensive study. The author analyzes the codicological, paleological, and artistic aspects of the manuscripts. Includes a detailed catalogue of the extant manuscripts. Nearly all the volumes are assigned to Constantinople during the second half of the 11th c.; about half of the examples are remnants of seven editions. ;
