Abstract :
Looks at the architectural history of Port Vila, now the capital of Vanuatu. The Anglo-French Condominium went into effect in 1907; the Condominium made the islands a region of joint French and British influence over which neither power had sovereignty. Around 1910 six official residences and two public buildings were constructed on a grand scale. The author investigates several questions: What notions of the New Hebrides as a juristic experiment were asserted and explored through these buildings? What does the failure to adequately maintain the buildings, or to build others on this scale, reveal about various views of the New Hebrides as a colonial enterprise? If the buildings were far too grand for the community they served, why were they built at all? ;
