Abstract :
During the strike of 1878 numerous men and women took to the streets, rebelling not only against their capitalist employers but also against their own leaders who had been urging them to be restrained.aders in the Lancashire cotton textile districts negotiated with employers using a 'language of respectable dissent' that stressed the idea of 'respectable manhood'. Rose argues that this gendered style of contention was associated with important political and organizational developments that created fissures among the workers. ;
