Title :

Redefinitions of abjection in contemporary performances of the female body

Abstract :
Deals with the recent profusion of the 'question of the body' in the visual arts and the recurrent use of the category of the 'abject' in its representation. Author suggests that what is at play in the contemporary use of the abject is a 'return to the body,' but one that produces an excessivity that problematizes the absence/presence duality and opens up new cybernetic definititions of subjectivity. Examines several works (especially sculpture) by women artists including Mona Hatoum, Kiki Smith, and Céline Baril, characterizing them as abject performances of the body of feminist artistic practices. ;
