Abstract :
Traces Jarves' activity (1850s) and milieu in Florence, where he studied and collected Tuscan Renaissance art, and analyzes his attempts at constructing an American taste for early Renaissance painting. Finds that his critical method and and didactic approach were aimed at dimishing American hostility towards European culture (especially that of Catholic Italy), and at creating a market for his collection. Analyzes the negative criticism his collection (exhibited 1860, at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York) received, and his failed attempts (in spite of the help of Charles Eliot Norton) to interest the Boston Athenaeum and other American museums in acquiring his paintings. Also examines his attributions of the 13th-15th c. paintings, which were finally purchased (1871) by the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven. ;
