Abstract :
Examines some issues of language, both verbal and visual, involved in the process of art historical writing. Makes use of a few classical, Renaissance, and contemporary (Lacanian), ideas about the nature of exchange between one historical horizon and a subsequent one. Poses an abstracted model of the process of historical reconstruction at work. Considers how one period of time 'gazed' upon another, so that the terms of the relationship between the Renaissance and antiquity are necessarily visual. Particularly significant for the argument is Panofsky's idea of history writing or historical consciousness as predicated upon achieving a 'fixed distance' from that upon which the interpreter turns his or her gaze. Raphael's evocation of antiquity in the School of Athens (Rome, Vaticano, Stanza della Segnatura), serves as a pictorial example of this historiographic paradigm, organized as it is along such unyielding perspectival lines. Albertian perspective exemplifies not just the physics of the eye but the metaphysics of Renaissance culture, as it is an expression of a desire to order the world in a certain way. Because Burckhardt's historiographic aims are similarly motivated, characterizes the role of perspective as a symbolic form in his work as well. ;
