Abstract :
Interprets the iconography of Matthijs Bril's frescoes, commissioned by pope Gregory XIII in 1580, as decorations for rooms in the Tower of the Winds, his apartment in the Vatican palace, Rome. Shows how Bril used classical sources, especially the writings of Vitruvius and Pliny the Elder, as inspiration for his views of Rome. Points out that Bril's landscapes were entirely novel at the time, in their use of illusionistic architectonic frameworks and in their staffage. Asserts that in these mural paintings the artist combined the notion of realism in city views with the ideology of Rome as Holy City, with the Vatican as its centre. Proposes, finally, that this fresco style demonstrates that Counter Reformation art was not intentionally unoriginal in order to assert Church orthodoxy, but rather that in the late 16th c. there was a parallel between artistic innovation and a Christian ideology of reform. ;
