Abstract :
Quotes Vasari's report of a supposed dinner conversation in which he set out what he intended to accomplish with the Vite and how he wanted his new art history to be understood. He situated his anticipated Vite in a position of rivalry and superiority to earlier art histories, notably Pliny's and Paolo Giovio's. Argues that Vasari's tenets on imitation and style informed his understanding of a periodized, processual history. His elaboration of coherent and cohesive artistic periods gave history a new order that transcended Pliny's chronological sequence of artistic discoveries. Statements by Vasari and his readers about his literary style can shed new light on his relation to Pliny and how he saw the Vite as opening a new era of art history. ;
