Abstract :
The volume is divided into five geographical regions. Each of the four English regions is supported by historical and architectural introductions, and by an essay prompted by a key building in the region. The fifth section, on Wales, is the first overview devoted solely to medieval Welsh houses, concentrating as much on the political, social, economic and cultural reasons for the considerable differences between English domestic architecture as on the houses that have survived. Over 320 buildings have been reappraised, and include related structures of corporate occupation - academic colleges, secular colleges of canons, guild halls and monastic foundations - with their halls, retiring rooms, and lodging ranges. ;
