- Interprets images of aging New Englanders, especially old men of Nantucket Island, in Eastman Johnson's paintings and drawings - both genre pictures and figure studies. Carbone sees parallels between the physical decline and psychological isolation of Johnson's figures and the waning of a regional way of life. Written in connection with the traveling exhibition Eastman Johnson: painting America (New York, Brooklyn Museum of Art, until 6 Feb 2000). ;
