Abstract :
Contests Rudolph Wittkower's thesis that Alberti was the ideator of a Pythagorean interpretation of architectural space that generated the revolutionary identification (in Renaissance thought) of spatial and musical relationships, and which attests to a 'solemn faith in the harmonic-mathematical structure of the universe.' Argues that Alberti's writings on proportion (in De re aedificatoria) are re-elaborations of ideas repeated in mathematical writings throughout the Medieval period, and that he was constrained to enlarge on musical notions simply because these were less familiar than geometrical figures. Provides analyses critiquing the arguments of scholars (i.e., Eugenio Battisti, R. Klein, Paolo Portoghesi) who developed Wittkowers' thesis. ;
