Abstract :
Reassesses the mechanics of the influence of Italian art on 14th-15th c. northern artists such as Jean Pucelle and the Limbourg family. Questions the assumption that works by Pucelle such as the Hours of Jeanne d'Evreux1 (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cloisters; MS 54.1.2) were directly influenced by Duccio. Points to evidence of the circulation and collecting of small-scale Italian painting (e.g., manuscript illumination and panel painting) in northern Europe, and suggests that Pucelle relied on this type of material rather than undertaking on-site study in Italy, extending the argument to the Limbourgs and other northern artists. Also analyzes late Medieval artists' motives for travel, concluding that it is anachronistic to assume that 14th-early 15th cs. northern European artists travelled south explicitly to study Italian art, as Dürer and others later did. ;
