Abstract :
Argues that the role ascribed to the civic cult of the Virgin in the shaping of Sienese Madonna imagery during the second half of the 13th c. has been exaggerated. The commune was indeed dedicated to the Virgin, but the assertion that after the ceremonies on the eve of the Battle of Montaperti the city felt itself to be uniquely favoured by the benevolent guardianship of the Mother of God does not find support in contemporary documentary or artistic evidence. During the 13th c. Marian imagery developed independently of civic interest in the Virgin, under the patronage of the friars. In the early 14th c. the mendicant imagery was refashioned by the commune and the Montaperti accounts exaggerated. ;
