- Abstract :
- Identifies the site portrayed in the drawing traditionally known as The Villa Medici by Cabat (Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland) as in the Borgo Pio looking toward the Villa Belvedere at the north of the Vatican complex. Posits that the drawing was done during Cabat's first visit to Italy, 1836-1839. Discusses the reasons Cabat would have chosen to depict Papal rather than classical Rome and notes the importance of Poussin for 19th-c. French painters in Rome. Proposes that the drawing be known as View of the Villa Belvedere. ;
