Abstract :
On the 13th-19th c. history and architectural components of the base of the exterior of the cathedral in Pisa. Transcribes documents (1359-early 15th c.) that mention a low parapet of sculpted marble slabs (muricciuoli) encircling the base of the church, and sarcophagi set on this parapet, which was in-situ until the mid-19th c. Observes that the sculpture of the slabs was of a fine quality, and that several (now in Museo nazionale e civico di S. Matteo, Pisa) have been attributed by scholars to Giovanni Pisano. Proposes, on the basis of archeological and documentary evidence, that the 13th c. Pisan government established the cathedral exterior as a monumental cemetery (many of the Roman sarcophagi were reused as tombs for famous Pisans), in lieu of the Camposanto, which was still under construction. The tombs probably began to be moved to the Camposanto in the early 15th c. ;
