Abstract :
On creative licence as an aesthetic category and on the concept of the monstrous in Italian 16th c. architectural theory, and their bases in ancient texts (i.e., Horace's Ars poetica, Ovid's Metamorphoses and Vitruvius' De architectura). Points to the growing interest on the part of Renaissance architects in an invention strategy involving 'composing' and 'mixing' (comporre, mescolare), observing that these metaphors were 'encoded' in the Renaissance edition of Vitruvius (translated by Giovanni Battista Caporali; Perugia, 1536) from which they were absorbed into later treatise literature. Concludes that the monster described by Horace became 'the governing metaphor for a theory of imitation and invention in architecture'. ;
