Abstract :
Bax Farmhouse is one of several middling-sized houses in Kent that owe their origins to medieval building traditions, but embrace some of the new forms of the 16th c. The ostentatious use of stone, flint, brick and timber, which together make up its primary building materials, sets it apart from many of its contemporaries, while the crow-stepped gable of its east wing demonstrates that this is a house whose importance once belied its modest size. A date stone inscribed 1567 arguably refers to all the primary features visible today, and also to a western wing which was demolished in the 19th c. These features put Bax Farmhouse out of the run of everyday Kent houses. Despite such unusual qualities, Bax Farmhouse demonstrates an abiding characteristic of Kent estates, which was to support the construction and maintenance of generally small rather than stately country houses. ;
