Abstract :
Best known for earthworks such as Spiral Jetty (Ogden, Utah) and Broken Circle/Spiral Hill (Emmen, Netherlands), Smithson had a past that began well before his 1965 minimalist sculptures. Dominated by collages on paper, the works Smithson dubbed 'pre-conscious' give scholars a new and more complex vision of this artist's significance. Far from some of the gentle interpretations of his earthworks as primitivist homages to a venerated earth, or of his vision in general as a paean to technological sublimity, the earlier suppressed work shows the destabilizing flows of libido that lay at the core of his production. The theoretical issues raised by such a situation sharpen concerns within art history in general. Denying old-fashioned considerations of artistic 'intention,' art historians must nonetheless confront the paradox of work banished from the author-function by the author himself, but not destroyed. The paper addresses such awkward moments, when 'the author' most privileged by art-historical discourse (the artist) draws a boundary limiting the possibility of identity itself around his works. ;
