Abstract :
The pagan connotation of the Escorial (1563-1584), caused by the use of a 'Vitruvian' style, a reminder of Roman polytheism, was 'christianized' by connecting the King Philip II's convent palace with sacred images: the divine architecture as described in the old testament. This correlation can be traced back in treatises and works of art made under the protection of the monarch. This paper discusses these new layers of meaning: two different 'filters' that were used to purify the architectural language into a 'Christian' one, will be explained. Looks first at the portrait of S. Augustine by Alonso Sanchez Coelle and Fray Jose Sigüenza's description of the Escorial. Second, discusses Juan Bautista de Villalpando's treatise on the reconstruction of the Temple of Solomon. This newly created, purely theoretical, style is called the 'new architecture of the new Christian antiquity'. ;
