Abstract :
In 1678-80, Gerard de Lairesse painted his Hofgallery, a stage set for the Amsterdam theater. It was to become his most famous work. In 1772 a fire destroyed it, together with the theater building. This paper discusses the reasons why it differs so much from De Lairesse's easel paintings and mural paintings. The stage set was part of a whole, in which poetry, acting, music, dancing, costumes, lighting, stage direction and stage set fused into one Gesamtkunstwerk. The art of perspective made its illusionism work. Outside the theater, illusionistic art is not frequently found in Holland. It is a central issue in De Lairesse's treatise on the theory and practice of art, however. ;
