Abstract :
Ca. 1500, the Franciscan doctor of theology and law Thomas Murner devised a set of playing cards, the Logical card game (known to us only in the form of a book), which was inspired by traditional mnemonology. It incorporates 51 woodcuts, comprising visual images that were meant to represent the logical text. Although the mnemonic system was, through the 17th c., generally believed to be effective, later writers judged it less so. The author argues that this subsequent criticism stemmed from a lack of familiarity with the visual language employed by Murner, rather than from any weakness in the concepts of the system itself. ;
