Abstract :
Catalogue of the Khalili collection of Indian painting which comprises works dating from the 16th to the mid-19th cs. These represent the production not only of the Muslim ateliers within the imperial Mughal court but also of artists working for the Deccani sultanates and the provincial cities of Oudh. The author traces the effect of the changing interests of different imperial patrons on the work of their ateliers and discusses the growing influence of European art on Indian painting, from the arrival of Western prints in India in the early 17th c. to the development of the Company style in the 18th and 19th cs. Includes the sections 'European influences in Mughal painting' and 'European influence in late Mughal and Rajasthani painting'. Full catalogue entries. ;
