Abstract :
In Edgar Degas's painting Four Ballerinas on the Stage, now in the São Paulo Museum of Art, the outlines of the raised arm of the third ballerina are repeated several times. This may be the result of retouching or evidence of uncertainty of execution. Yet the same feature can be found in numerous other pictures and since it would have been easy to erase such marks when the work was finished it can only be concluded that it was a deliberate figurative device used by the artist to convey a sense of the figures' movement: a conscious choice of unquestionable structural significance that has to be seen and appreciated as such. ;
