Abstract :
Considers works of Millet and Courbet in the light of the degree to which realism has been overcome in the paintings. For both artists, the portrayal of reality in academic art had degenerated to idealization. Both painters demonstrate a tendency towards a subjective interpretation of truth, while ignoring the concept of the unity of the True, the Beautiful, and the Good, which had dominated painting from Plato through to Hegel and Victor Cousin. The necessity to renounce this unity (in favor of art that is socially involved and focused on everyday life) explains why both painters stress the ugly, the coarse, the base, and the sordid in formal and thematic issues - not as a side product of this genre but as a challenge to its traditional values. Explains how a new, subjective interpretation of truth, goodness, and beauty grows by turning away from representational art to develop abstract forms that look toward the works of Seurat, Redon, Cézanne, and the art of the 20th c. ;
