- Considers the impact on Italian Renaissance culture made by the archaeological and aesthetic discoveries of the antique past in 15th- and 16th-c. Rome. Discusses the past's recovery, literary as well as archaeological; the nature of fragments and what can be known about them and the wholes they represent; issues of reconstruction (particularly in the case of the Pasquino, now commonly identified as Menelaus with the Body of Patroclus1, the Cleopatra-Ariadne, and the Bed of Polyclitus); and the use of these fragments made by a variety of artists, with a focus on the work of Bandinelli. ;
