Abstract :
A reference source for identifying and comprehending the subjects, stories, symbols, and themes frequently represented in Early Christian, western medieval, and Byzantine art. The entries in this dictionary provide information about pictorial subjects, terms, signs, and symbols and also include descriptions of texts and authors whose works were frequently illustrated or who provided inspiration for the visual arts during the Middle Ages. The purpose of this dictionary is to provide readers with basic information about the main subjects and interests found in western and Byzantine art of the medieval period. The entries cover topics relevant to the beginnings and development of Christian pictorial arts in the first centuries A.D. up through the 15th-c. late Gothic period in the west, and, for the Byzantine world, the 1453 fall of Constantinople. ;
