Abstract :
Suggests that the iconography of the damaged mural painting by Masaccio discovered behind an 18th c. altar in the Brancacci chapel (Florence, S. Maria del Carmine) was Arrest of Christ and Peter Cutting off Malco's Ear. Hypothetically reconstructs the composition based on Fra Angelico's presentation of the subject in two paintings in the Museo di S. Marco, Florence. Also offers a hypothetical reconstruction (based on the painting by Benozzo Gozzoli in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) of the original composition by Masaccio for the Fall of Simon Magus, commenting that Filippino Lippi's interpretation of this subject in the chapel was a 'betrayal' of Masaccio's project. Finally, suggests that the face of S. Peter in the Crucifixion of S. Peter (Brancacci Chapel) is from the original composition by Masaccio, and that Lippi integrated it into his painting. ;
