Abstract :
Examines how war memorial halls were constructed, often contentiously, to commemorate an historical event unique in scale and in the intensity of human loss, and, gradually, became fitting sites of mourning in a secularising age. Offers case studies from Sussex where the construction of war memorial halls was the exception rather than the rule. However, where the decision took place, gentry paternalism was forced to respond to popular demands and the ensuing changes in social relations had profound implications for the parish church as the physical, moral and historic embodiment of village life. ;
